NANS Condemns UI’s Alleged Expulsion Move on Student Protesters, Demands Immediate Reversal

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the reported plan by the University of Ibadan to expel three students – Olamide Gbadegeshin, Aduwo Ayodele, and Nice Linus – over their participation in a peaceful protest against a fee hike.

In a statement dated July 13, 2025, NANS described the move as “alarming” and “fundamentally undermining” students’ rights to peaceful assembly. It noted that the students had earlier been arrested in May, reportedly by military personnel, for holding placards during a protest against a fee increase of up to 480%.

“The planned expulsion is not only unjust but reckless,” the statement read, adding that the University risks “transforming itself into a repressive institution.”

NANS issued a four-point demand, including the cancellation of the expulsion move, public clarification within seven working days, adoption of dialogue-based grievance mechanisms, and a public apology from the security agencies involved.
