MBBS Qualifies for Survival Cup Quarter-finals With a Perfect Record as MD1 and 2 End
The Survival Cup—a competition among sophomore students in the University of Ibadan—kicked off on Friday, July 31, between a combined team of Mathematics and Science and Technology Education (STE) and Chemistry and Microbiology at the Old Football Pitch. The match ended 3 goals to nil as Math/STE took all three points, marking the first win of the competition.
Afterwards, the first matchday fixtures began. On Monday, August 3, Public Stats faced Forestry/Wildlife in group E and ended up putting four goals past them in a 4-1 victory. On the same day, Donald-led MBBS in group B grabbed three points after scoring two goals and keeping a clean sheet against WBE/AEE.
In group D, however, Veterinary Medicine second-year students shared the spoils with Philosophy/European Studies in a 2-2 draw on the 4th of August. On the following day in group F, Political Science cruised past Biochemistry/Physiology, scoring three goals and conceding one.
The second matchday started officially on Friday, August 8, with Public Stats failing to maintain the momentum from its previous victory, subsequently losing 2-0 to Computer Science/Physics before managing to pull one back towards the end to make it 2-1.
The second and third matches of matchday 2, held on Saturday, August 8, were between Mechanical Engineering vs Mathematics/STE and Agric Economics/CPEB vs Economics. Mechanical Engineering won over their opponent with a lone goal, while Agric Economics/CPEB won with two goals; both kept a clean sheet. The third match of the day between Nursing/Dentistry and Petroleum Engineering is yet to be played.
On Sunday, August 9, the Medicine boys took on URP/QS, dominating them with two first-half goals early in the match and keeping a clean sheet. They became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinal, scoring four goals, keeping two clean sheets, and ending their group stage campaign with a perfect record.
After the new quarter-finalists left the pitch, Civil Engineering/Archaeology & Anthropology played their first match of the competition against European Studies/Philosophy, holding them to a goalless draw and denying them a direct qualification to the quarter-finals.
In the last match of the day, also the last in MD2, Biochemistry/Physiology was eliminated from the competition after a second shocking loss to Sociology/Psychology, scoring zero goals and conceding three.
The second leg of the tie between Group G’s two occupants, Petroleum Engineering and Nursing/Dentistry, will be played at 3 PM today, while the date for the postponed first leg will be decided later.
