UI’SU Disowns NANS President’s Statement on Outgoing UI VC

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU) has distanced itself from a recent statement by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comr. Akintoye Babatunde Afeez, concerning the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale. In a statement dated July 24, 2026, the Union clarified that the publication was neither initiated, endorsed nor authorised by its leadership.
The Union stated that its leadership was not consulted before the NANS President’s statement was made public and stressed that it “does not, in any way, represent the official position” of UI’SU.
While reaffirming its history of engaging University management on matters affecting students, the Union said such engagements may involve disagreement, advocacy and, when necessary, firm action. It described these engagements as part of the tradition of student unionism at the University.
UISU further reaffirmed its commitment to defending students’ interests while maintaining “dignity, conviction, and integrity.” The Union added that its official positions on matters affecting students would continue to be communicated only through its recognised channels.
