UI’SU Confirms Fire Extinguisher Installation Across Halls of Residence Ahead of Gas Usage Approval

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) has announced the commencement of fire extinguisher installations across the halls of residence, a key safety requirement for the final approval of cooking gas usage in the halls. The development was disclosed in a statement dated July 23, 2026.

The Union said the delay in approving gas usage was linked to safety measures that must be completed before the University can grant final approval. It noted that the installation of fire extinguishers is one of the major requirements and confirmed that the process has now commenced across the halls.

The push for cooking gas approval has followed prolonged concerns over the restrictions on cooking appliances in the halls, with students having to rely largely on kerosene stoves. The Union said it has continued to engage relevant authorities on the matter and will keep following up until students can use gas safely and with official approval.

While asking students for a little more patience, the Union expressed optimism that the ongoing installations would bring the process closer to completion. It assured students that further updates would be communicated once the approval process is concluded.
