UI Students’ Union Confirms Botfly Infestation, Issues Health Warning

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has confirmed medically attended cases of human botfly larvae infestation among students, prompting the Health Advisory Committee to issue a campus-wide notice on July 15, 2025.

According to the communique signed, the affected students presented with unusual skin swellings and discomfort, but are currently receiving proper treatment. The condition, known as myiasis, occurs when botfly larvae penetrate the skin usually via mosquito bites and grow beneath it.

Students have been advised to look out for symptoms such as painful or itchy swellings, a sensation of movement under the skin, and possible pus or fluid discharge. The advisory also urges students to use insect repellents, avoid sleeping outdoors, maintain good hygiene, and seek immediate medical help if unusual skin symptoms appear.
