Indy, Idia, Awo Progress from Jaw War: Rise of Legends Prelims
Six halls of residence have qualified for the Quarter-Finals of Jaw War: Rise of Legends from the preliminary stage which took place at the New Faculty of Technology Lecture Theatre, University of Ibadan, on the 26th November, 2024.
These halls are; the Great Independence Hall, Queen Idia Hall, Obafemi Awolowo Hall, Nnamdi Azikwe Hall, Queen Elizabeth II Hall, and Lord Tedder Hall, who qualified as best losers.
Jaw War: Rise of Legends, which is the tenth instalment of the annual public-speaking contest, began with an address from the President of the Literary and Debating Society, UI, Ogonna Okere, who spoke on the importance of the event and the relevance of the ‘Rise of Legends’ tag for this edition. This was preceded by a musical performance, and followed by the introduction of judges. The Dean of Student Affairs, and Jaw-War regular Dr Demola Lewis, served as the Chief Judge for the night, with Messers Morgan Stephen and Temitope Ishola, serving as the other two judges.
Following the declaration of modalities by Dr Lewis, the debate began proper, with speakers from each hall debating on topics centred around the theme, “Africa’s Travails and Triumphs: Moving Forward and Learning From The Past”. At the end of the debates, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall defeated the Ransome Kuti Hally, 67.3 to 65.1 points, the Great Independence Hall defeated Lord Tedder Hall by 72.5 to 72.25 points, the Obafemi Awolowo Hall defeated the Alexander Brown Hall by 71.6 to 66 points, Queen Elizabeth II Hall defeated the Sultan Bello Hall by 66.8 to 66.6 points, and the Queen Idia Hall defeated the Kenneth Mellanby Hall by 76.1 to 61.6 points, respectively. Amoo Oluwabukunmi, the first speaker for Queen Idia Hall, emerged as the Overall Best speaker with 78.6%.
The Quarter-Finals for the Hall Category will take place on Thursday, 5th November 2024. However, the next stop on the calendar is the Faculty Preliminaries on Thursday, 28th November, 2024.
