ASUU Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government, Threatens Two-Week Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on a two-week warning strike if lingering issues in its renegotiated agreement remain unaddressed.

In a bulletin signed by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on September 29, 2025, the union stated that the ultimatum was necessary following the government’s failure to act on resolutions contained in the renegotiated document transmitted since February 2025.

The bulletin noted that one week after communicating the ultimatum to the Ministers of Labour and Education, there had been “no meaningful development deserving of any consideration.” ASUU said its demands aim to compel the government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement, alongside other pending issues.

Calling for unity among members, Piwuna urged lecturers to prepare for mobilization and maintain solidarity, stressing that “we are strong when we organise, but weakened when we agonise.”

He advised members to take instructions only from their branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators while awaiting further updates.
