Tension Brews as NIMSA Presidency Dissolves Southwest Leadership, Region Responds with Rejection

The Nigerian Medical Students’ Association (NIMSA) is facing a fresh wave of internal crisis following a circular issued on August 1, 2025, by its National President, Ahmadu Sardauna, announcing a major reshuffle within its leadership.

Key among the changes was the suspension of Mustapha Lateefat, the Southwest Regional Coordinator, and the dissolution of the entire Southwest Regional Executive Council. The circular also declared the position of Vice President Internal (VPi) vacant, inviting new applications from qualified candidates within the Southwest.

In swift response, the NIMSA Southwest Caucus rejected the reshuffle, describing the announcement as “executive brigandage” and “administrative rascality.” In a circular released later on the same day, the region declared Mr. Ahmadu Sardauna persona non grata, refusing to recognise his presidency and affirming that there is “no vacancy” in the offices of VPi and Regional Coordinator.

The caucus maintained that Mr. Hameed Olamide Dauda of ILUMSA remains the duly elected Vice President Internal, and Ms Mustapha Lateefat retains her role as Regional Coordinator. The circular further warned that anyone who accepts fresh appointments from the NIMSA President would be regarded as an “enemy of the region.”

As of now, both camps remain firm in their positions, raising concerns about unity and leadership within the association.
