Super Cup Male and Female Quarter Finals Roundup

After another round of palpitating displays of doggedness, four departments each, from the male and female category had to bid the tournament goodbye. Before the semis showdown, let’s have a rundown of how the quarterfinals played out in the 2023/2024 Super Cup.

Male Category

As opposed to the initial flyer put out for the male category which stated that the 4 matches were to hold on Tuesday, 10th of December, 2024, 3 out of 4 matches were played on Tuesday, while the last match was played on Wednesday.

Political Science vs Philosophy

This match was the first of the quarter finals and did not disappoint. Both sides started out playing more defensively than offensively. Minutes into the first half, Philosophy converted a chance opening the score, moments later they doubled their lead with Papi scoring a worldie, a chip shot compounding the misery of the opposition.

The POS side were relentless, trying to get back in the game, but they couldn’t materialize any of their plans by the end of the first half. The resilience of the POS team finally paid off with Pogba reducing the deficit to 2 goals to 1, sparking hopes of a “remontada”.

In the final minutes of the second half, Pogba brought the POS side level, securing a brace. Both teams advanced to penalties, where POS came out victorious, 4-3. A match to forget for the Philosophy side.

IPE vs Dentistry

The second match of the day did not leave up to the hype of the first, as both sides held each other to a goalless draw, the engineering side got a spot in the semi-finals after defeating Dentistry 5 goals to 3 on penalties.

MBBS vs Law

The match started bleakly for the student doctors as Gerald of MBBS was sent off after trying to prevent a determining attacker from Law from getting past, denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. Law failed to make anything out of the resulting free kick. Despite being down by a player, the student doctors dominated the game for most of the first half. Habeeb of MBBS known for his set piece expertise took two successive free kicks but it was not his day.

14 minutes into the first half, Teslim of MBBS saw his goal ruled out for offside, a minute later Karbon slotted the ball home putting the student doctors up. The MBBS team pounced again moments after their first goal, Sir Dave doubling the student doctors’ lead thanks to a Karbon assist. Karbon went on to round off the first half securing a brace kudos to an assist from Habeeb.

The second half started with no contrast to the first, MBBS still having the upper hand whilst being a man down. 15 minutes into the second half, a law defender made an error at the defensive line, Dave of MBBS claimed the ball calmly setting up his teammate Teslim for the 4th goal.

Law had an opportunity to score a consolation goal later on, the MBBS goalie made sure it was futile. In the final minute of the match, just as the law supporters thought their misery was over, Habeeb took a shot from some yards outside the box, securing a 5-0 win and a well-deserved place in the semi-finals.

Chemistry vs Vet. Medicine

Postponed to Wednesday, 11th of December, the Vet. side advanced thanks to a lone goal from Teslim of Vet through a free kick.

Female Category

ASSE vs Nursing

Nursing joined the male Law team in suffering a hard loss in the quarter finals. ASSE took their spot in the semi-finals after thumping the Nursing side 9 goals without a response. Esther of ASSE scored 5 goals while Lola scored the other 4 goals in the match.

European Studies vs Forestry

The game ended in a goalless draw as no side could materialize any of the chances they had. Forestry got the upper hand in the penalty shootout beating European Studies 3-2.

MBBS vs Vet. Medicine

The female MBBS team ensured that their male counterparts did not have all the fun and glory to themselves, they won in style, 4-0, with Chidinma scoring a brace and VK and Eseosa being on the scoresheet too.

Statistics vs Animal Science

Statistics were given an automatic walk over win as they will advance to the semi-finals.

4 teams gone per category; 4 teams left to charge for the trophy. In the male category, POS will be going against IPE and MBBS against Vet. Medicine. For the females, ASSE will be going against MBBS and Statistics against Forestry. There are some scores to be settled with these semi-finals fixtures, let’s see how this unfolds.
