SUECUI Lifts Ban on Electoral Activities, Spells Out Already Flouted Guideline

The Students’ Union Electoral Commission, University of Ibadan, has lifted the ban on Electoral activities, according to a release circulated via social media, on Saturday, 18th January 2025.

The release, signed by the Heads of the Publicity and Logistics Sub-committees of the SUECUI, Olanrewaju Ibrahim and Olaniyi Dolapo, respectively, was accompanied by a circulation of a document by Electoral Commissioners containing; the previously mentioned election timetable, list of available positions (Executive Council and Students’ Representative Council), requirements for aspirants, campaign guidelines, and form collection and submission procedure.

The campaign guidelines warn against violence, admonishing aspirants not to deface walls with campaign posters/banners and to abide by the school regulations guiding publicity on campus. However, the second guideline listed above already appears to be broken as aspirants have defaced many sections of the University with their posters and handbills as seen in a recent IndyPress report. It remains to be seen if any action will be taken in this regard.

According to the SUECUI-signed document, all Executive and SRC positions are open to contesting. Aspirants can collect forms at Room 22, Students’ Affairs Building between 10 AM and 2 PM daily, with the forms going for 8,000 Naira (President), 6,000 Naira (Vice President), 5,000 Naira (Other Executive Positions), and 2,500 Naira (SRC). Deadlines for submission are 2 PM on 31st January 2025 (Executive Council) and 2 PM on 24th February 2025 (SRC), provided that the required documents are attached as listed in the circular.

The general requirement to contest is that “Aspirants must be of unscathed record, not having been convicted by the police, rusticated or expelled from any Institution, ejected from Hall of Residence or indulging in substance abuse, and they must be persons proven to abide by the rule of law”. Also, all aspirants “must score at least 50% during the screening and should be of sound mind”.

In addition, all aspirants “should not be in 100 level or final year”. The presidential aspirants, in particular, “must be at least in 400 level or the penultimate year, as applicable, during the 2023/2024 academic session”. Minimum CPGA Scores of 3.0 (2;1 Division) and 2.0 (2;2 Division), are required for Executive and House Leadership positions, and SRC offices, respectively.

The SUECUI had previously sent out a list of Electoral Commissioners for each Hall and Faculty on Friday, January 17th, 2025, names of which can be seen below.
