Council of Faculty Presidents, UI, Also Proposes 5,000 Naira Basic Dues to UI’SRC

On the 3rd of April, 2025, the Council of Faculty Presidents, University of Ibadan, wrote to the Students’ Representative Council to propose an increment in basic dues.

In the letter signed by Abiola Samuel and Oyebanji Israel, the council’s chairman and secretary, respectively, they formally notified the SRC of the decision to propose an increment in compulsory basic faculty dues from 3,000 Naira to 5,000 Naira. As is in the notification sent out by the Council of Hall Chairpersons on the 30th of March, 2025, the letter clarified that the decision was made after careful deliberation by the faculty presidents.

They further explained that 3,000 Naira is no longer enough to cater to the plans of the various faculty associations on campus and the urge not to water down the existing standards begs for an increment. ‘Specifically, the ₦3,000 is no longer enough to organize constitutional and customary events such as Freshers’ Week, dinner, faculty week, elections, Dean’s cup, and sessional packages, etc. For instance, the production of a fairly quality notebook costs between ₦1,200 to ₦1,600.’

The economic reality is no news to the student community and the Council of Faculty Presidents understands this but believes that the benefits of the increment far outweigh the costs. The letter concluded by requesting an engagement with the SRC to further deliberate on the proposed increment.

COHC and COFP have sent out a proposal for dues increment in the space of a week and both are asking the SRC to further engage them on the reasons and probable alternatives. If granted, students would be paying 4,000 Naira more across their halls and faculties, compared to the previous session.
