Defending champions MBBS kept their SEALS Cup title defence alive with a 2-1 victory over History on Friday, 8th May, 2026, at the Old Football Pitch, SUB.
The two teams came into the round of 16 tie having knocked out their respective group winners, Animal Science and Sociology in the round of 32, in what has become a widespread pattern in the tournament, with several group stage winners finding the knockout stage a different proposition altogether. Just after 4 PM, both teams took to the field, Ibadan Medicine in navy blue and Obaro Warriors in black, with a quarter-final fixture against Political Science on the line.

The same MBBS lineup that got the job done against Animal Science in the round of 32 was also given the nod for this fixture. Fuhad got the game started in what was a cagey first half. Both teams played end to end but neither could find the breakthrough moment they craved. Both teams had shots from range go wide, and the best chance of the half fell to History, as Emerald tipped a shot onto the bar to ensure the half ended goalless.
Both sides started the second half much brighter and with renewed urgency, presumably spurred by their respective half-time team talks. History had the first nibble at the cherry, with Emerald once again tipping over the bar for a corner. They would finally hit the net from the resulting corner, however — after the ball swung in was met three times and blocked twice before it squeezed past the keeper. But it took under five minutes for MBBS to bag the equaliser. Team captain Istanbul hit a rocket of a free kick from beyond the halfway line that the keeper could do little about. And almost immediately after the restart, they would get a second after some good link-up play, with Ibrahim tucking in a rebound after the keeper saved twice. They almost made it three on two occasions soon after, but were denied first by a foul then by the linesman’s flag.
Play would be temporarily halted as tensions flared between the Match Commissioner and the History coach and some of his contingent, requiring the referee to intervene. Both teams resumed the end-to-end football when the game restarted and History won a series of corners but failed to make them count. Sir Dave also had a chance well saved, then MBBS struck the post before the History goalkeeper pulled off a spectacular double save to deny Sir Dave and then substitute Jide from point-blank range. That passage of play would prove to be the last meaningful action as the referee drew the game to a close.

With this victory, it is a rivalry renewed against familiar opponents: the defending champions have once again set up a quarter-final tie against Political Science, who downed Mechanical Engineering three goals to nil to book their own place in the last eight. Fixtures between these two have always been tightly contested and full of entertaining football. In the last three outings, Political Science hold the advantage with two wins — a 1-0 victory in the semi-finals of SEALS Cup ’23 and a penalty shootout win in the Super Cup ’24 — while MBBS claimed the most recent outing, a replica of this year’s tie, 2-1.
