INEC Activates Self-Service Portal for New Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has activated its self-service portal for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, allowing eligible Nigerians to register as first-time voters online. The portal, which became operational on Friday, was introduced to make voter registration more accessible and reduce the need for physical visits to INEC offices.
The activation follows a July 3 press release in which the Commission announced the introduction of the self-service registration option for eligible Nigerians. To use the platform, applicants must possess a National Identification Number (NIN) and have access to the phone number linked to it.
“The self-service option will enable eligible citizens to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without having to physically visit an INEC office.” The press release reads.
The commission added that the system incorporates robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks designed to preserve the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The development comes after INEC extended the Continuous Voter Registration exercise by two weeks. Eligible Nigerians now have until Sunday, July 26, 2026, to complete their voter registration.
