FAMSA-SCOMER (UIMSA) Organizes Physical First Aid and Emergency Care Training
The University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA) in collaboration with Federation of African Students’ Association – Standing Committee on Medical Education and Research (FAMSA-SCOMER) organized a physical First Aid and Emergency Care Training on Saturday, July 27th, 2024 at the Preclinical Lecture Theatre (PLT), Department of Physiology, University of Ibadan.
The training which was slated for 9 am, eventually commenced at 10:17 am with an opening address by the Liaison Officer, FAMSA-SCOMER (UIMSA chapter), Jolly Thomas, a member of the 2k25 class. The national anthem was taken followed by the welcome address from the FAMSA Vice President, Mr. Victor Femi-Lawal, a member of the 2k23 class. The attendees included but were not limited to medical students, and attendance was both physically and virtually for those who couldn’t join physically.
The training session was facilitated by two Quarter Masters of the Nigerian Red Cross (UCH department): Mr. Osinachi Ihediohanma and Mr. Godlives Patrick. The first facilitator, Mr Osinachi Ihediohanma took the attendees through what first aid is and necessary skills needed to become a qualified first aider, and also laid emphasis on the importance of knowing how to improvise as a first aider. He eventually delved into what Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was all about, and educated the attendees about the dos and don’ts of CPR demonstrating on a medical mannequin.
The second facilitator, Mr. Godlives Patrick educated the attendees on Burns and Fractures: meaning and first aid emergency care. He went on further to demonstrate different techniques for dressing fractures. The attendees were divided into groups and made to put into practice the different techniques taught. The training came to an end at around 12:15 pm.
Speaking with the UIMSA Press, Liaison Officer for FAMSA SCOMER, Jolly Thomas said, “The necessity for hosting the physical first aid and emergency care training session was driven by several important factors. Enhancing the practical skills of students on campus is crucial, as it bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Moreover, promoting public safety by equipping participants with first aid skills ensures our community is better prepared to handle emergencies effectively. Collaborating with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, UCH Detachment, brought invaluable expertise, ensuring high-quality training aligned with best practices. Addressing the needs of our student body, who expressed a strong interest in practical emergency care training, was another key motivator. This initiative reflects FAMSA SCOMER commitment to providing relevant educational opportunities.”
