Awo Hall Majority Leader-elect Disqualified over SDC Case

Nice Linus, a 300-level student of the Faculty of Law, has been disqualified from her position as Majority Leader-elect of the Obafemi Awolowo Hall in the 12th Assembly of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Students’ Representative Council (SRC), over her pending case with the Students Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

This was contained in an internal memorandum, dated Tuesday, 4th March, 2025, from the Deputy Registrar (Students) and Chairman of the Students’ Union Electoral Commission UI (SUEC UI), Mr T.I Musa.

The memo read, “It has come to my notice that in the just concluded SRC Election, held on Saturday 1, March 2025, a candidate who has a pending Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC) case contested and won the Election. This appears to have been an oversight, as the University regulations clearly state that students with pending Disciplinary cases are not eligible to contest or hold any elected positions until their cases are resolved”.

It added that as a ‘necessary change’, Miss Olaleye Abolaji Joy, who scored 89 points would automatically become Majority Leader-elect in place of the disqualified Nice Linus.

Miss Linus is one of three students, alongside third-year History student, Aduwo Ayodele, and 700-level student of the Institute of African Studies, Olamide Gbadegesin, facing the SDC for protesting the school fee hike at the inauguration ceremony of the current UI’ SU leadership on 13th May 2024.

According to a UCJ UI report, all three faced an SDC fact-finding panel on July 2nd, 2024. However, the case appeared to have stalled since. This decision follows calls from organisations like Amnesty International, defending the students’ rights to protest. It remains to be seen what decision the University Management will take.
