Sigma Essay Competition Winners, Scholars, Awarded at Sigma Members Awards Night

Students with the top five entries in the Benedict Kudaya Sigma Essay Competition, and Scholars for the 2025 Sigma Scholarship Scheme, were awarded, alongside outstanding members of the Sigma Club at the Sigma Members Awards Night which took place on Sunday, 17th March, 2025, at the U and I Building, UI. 

The event, which is the final activity of the Club for the session, featured Awards to members of the Club who had distinguished themselves in various capacities, as well as members who served as Committee Heads throughout the session. 

In his opening address, the Sigma Chief, Olalekan Ajibola, now a graduate of the Faculty of Law, spoke about the various philanthropic activities of the club, their legacy, and the importance of raising ‘whole men’. He added, “Our distinguished alumni serve as living proof to the greatness that this club produces. Beyond building whole men, we have remained committed to initiatives that uplift others. Touching lives through impactful interventions that have become the gold standard. Our interventions have left indelible marks.

Following this was the presentation of prizes to students with the top five entries, with the sixth to fifteenth entries also getting a certificate of recognition. The topics for the contest was, “Creating lasting social change: strategies for effective socio-philanthropic interventions in Nigeria”. Below is the list of the top 15:

7th – Soneye Temitope

8th – Idowu Ademola

9th – Towojeni Joseph

10th – Phillip Hope

11th – Samuel Samson Tobiloba

12th – Iwaeni Tosin

13th – Eze Anita

14th – Samuel Oluwasegun

15th – Ilemobayo Emmanuel

The top five walked away with cash prizes of 25,000, 50, 000 ,100,000, 150,000 and 200,000 Naira, respectively. When invited on stage, the winner, Ogunsola Emmanuel, now a Mechanical Engineering graduate, expressed his gratitude for the win, before launching into a delivery of his essay.

In the Awards section for Sigmaites, a UIMSAite, Bright Oghenetega, emerged as the Best Committee Chairman. 

Five UItes, including; Mayowa Adekola (Arts and Social Sciences Education), Olusoga Feyisara (Nursing), Azeez Wariz (Biomedical Laboratory Science), Sanni Oluwatobiloba (Medicine and Surgery), and Bamikole Khadijat (Biochemistry), were awarded 100,000 Naira respectively, as part of the Scholarship Schme. 

Dignitaries at the event include several Old Sigmaites as well as members of the newly-inaugurated UI Students’ Union Executive Council, bar the Sports Secretary.
