UIMSA Inaugurates New Executives, Legislative Leadership
The University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association inaugurated new members of its Executive Council, Senate, and Congress, along with leadership of the latter two, on Saturday, the 27th of April, 2024, in hybrid meetings online, via Google Meet and at the Famewo Common Room, Alexander Brown Hall.
The inauguration, which marked the beginning of the 2023/2024 tenure, saw the winners of the elections held on Saturday, the 20th of April, 2024, officially sworn into office. For the Executive Council, this comprises of Joshua John Inioluwa – President, Abu-Idris Meliat – Vice President, Olu-Adegbola Folusho – General Secretary, Ogunnaike Oreoluwa – Assistant General Secretary, Alimi Mubarak – Public Relations Officer, Olayiwola Theophilus – Special Duties Officer (Clinicals), Abraham Greatness – Special Duties Officer (Preclinicals), and Onyiuke Chidinma – Sports Secretary.
In UIMSA’s Senate, 27 out of a possible 30 Senators were elected, with the 200-level class having to partake in a runoff election on the 21st of April, 2024, due to a minor controversy with the initial results. While for Congress, only 22 of the available 50 seats were contested for and won. After the Senate Leadership elections, which took place in the course of the sitting, the following emerged as the House’s Officers for the next tenure: Adeniyi Adesola – Senate Chairman, Babatunde Dauda – Deputy Senate Chair, Elijah Olaniyi – Senate Registrar, Phillip Idowu – Deputy Senate Registrar, and Temiloluwa Aderemi – Chief Whip.
For Congress, three out of four Officers were elected on the 27th, these being: Olaniyi Blessing – Congress Scribe, Nwaobi Princess – Congress Chief Whip, and Denbo Oweikpodor-Deseye – Deputy Congress Chancellor. The position of Congress Chancellor was eventually filled by the former Speaker of the University of Ibadan Students Representative Council, Omotunde Olamide, on the 5th of May, 2024, during the Congress’ First Emergency Meeting for the tenure.
A call for applicants for the positions of Treasurer and Financial Secretary was sent out by the PRO with a deadline of May 6th, 2024. Therefore, UIMSAites could expect these positions to have been filled by the next Senate Meeting.
Speaking with UIMSAites after the election, the President, Inioluwa John, expressed his delight for the opportunity to lead the Association , saying, “As your President, I, (Joshua Inioluwa John), am thrilled to be leading our amazing Association this tenure. We are a 940-member Association with excellent potential as individuals and a community. No one does it better than the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association!
