Sigma Club Holds Press Conference Ahead of Sigma Chief’s League 3rd Edition

Sigma Chief’s League, organized by Sigma Club, a highly anticipated football tournament, is set to commence on the 18th of November, 2024. The opening ceremony will take place at the SUB football pitch, marking the beginning of an exciting two-week competition.

The Sigma Chief’s League press conference, held on Friday, November 8th, began with the recitation of the Sigma anthem. Loyalist Daniel Bright Oghenetega delivered the opening address, emphasizing the importance of unity and sportsmanship. Loyalist Afolabi Gideon, committee chairperson, outlined the competition’s format and rules.

The Sigma Chief’s League is open to all University of Ibadan students (Undergraduates and Postgraduates), excluding Distance Learning Centre (DLC) students. This year’s edition features a pick-your-team process, rather than hall or departmental-based teams. Unlike the last edition which followed the Champions League home and away match format, this edition will be a straight knockout format, with no home and away matches.

Registration begins November 9 and is free on a first-come, first-serve basis. Sixteen teams are expected to participate in both male and female categories. Male teams will consist of 11 players, with a maximum of 18 registered players per team, while female teams will have 5 players, with a maximum of 10 registered players per team.

To promote unity among faculties, male teams must comprise players from at least four faculties, with no more than 50% of players from the same faculty. Departmental female teams are also eligible to register.

Prizes will be awarded for:

– Highest goal scorer

– Player of the tournament

– Highest assist

– Fair play of the tournament

– Fans of the tournament

Registration requirements include:

– Valid student ID card for all players

– Undergraduate or postgraduate status

– Uniformed jersey for all players

– Proper hose

– Shin Guards

– Jaja cards for all participants

The Oyo State Ministry of Youths and Sport and the Oyo State Football Association have endorsed and supported the tournament. Registered referees from the Oyo State Football Association will officiate matches.

There was also a call for volunteers who will be needed for photography, videography, and sports analysis. Interested students can reach out to the organizing committee to participate.

The Committee Chairperson rounded off the press conference by reiterating that the Sigma Chief’s League aims to foster unity, teamwork, and healthy competition among University of Ibadan students. This tournament promises to be an unforgettable experience with its inclusive format and exciting prizes.
