Rebecca Ogunnaike Resigns as UIMSA Assistant General Secretary

Following a release made by the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association Senate Chair, Adesola Adeniyi, and Senate Registrar, Elijah Olaniyi, on Saturday, 21st December, 2024, Rebecca Ogunnaike, who served as the Assistant General Secretary for the 2023/2024 Tenure, has been confirmed to have resigned from her position.

The released stated that she tendered her resignation letter on 19th December, 2024, citing personal reasons that require her attention and energy at this time.

About twenty-five minutes prior, Miss Rebecca herself had sent a message to the WhatsApp group for UIMSAites, the UIMSA Central Group, announcing her resignation. She stated, “This decision, though difficult, is rooted in the need to prioritize my well-being, which have significantly impacted my ability to perform my duties as I promised during my campaign. Rather than holding onto a position where I cannot function optimally, even at this late stage in the tenure, I believe it is best to cede the role to another willing and capable UIMSAite”.

She also added that, “It has been an incredible journey, and I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and the memories we’ve shared. However, in these coming months, I must focus fully on restoring my strength, for I truly believe one cannot pour from an empty cup”.

The Senate release included that, in accordance with Article XXIII, Section 23 of the UIMSA Constitution (2022), which states: “When an elected office becomes vacant by virtue of resignation or otherwise, the vacant office shall be filled within thirty (30) days of occurrence of such vacancies. The process shall be by bye-election and shall be conducted in the manner of the ordinary election.”, the vacant position of Assistant General Secretary will be filled via a bye-election within thirty (30) days of this [Rebecca’s] resignation, with further details on the bye-election process to be communicated by the Electoral Commission.

Miss Rebecca’s resignation makes this the second session in a row in which the Association’s Assistant General Secretary would be resigning, following Peace Eze’s resignation in the 2022/2023 Session.
