Dokita Editorial Board holds 52nd Annual Symposium and 41st Journal Launch
The Editorial Board of Dokita, the Journal of the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association, held its 52nd Annual Symposium and 41st Journal Launch on Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre, UCH.
The Symposium began with a welcome address from the Editor-in-Chief, Mr Adejinmi Oluwapelumi, who discussed the importance of research in tackling threats to Nigeria’s public health.
The three sub-themes of the event – Infectious Diseases, Flooding & Research Funding Deficits – were tackled with speeches on each topic and a panel session to answer questions. Dr Olukemi Adekanmbi, Dr Oyewale Morakinyo and Professor Adesola Olumide served as resource persons for this section of the symposium. In talking about the threats to Nigeria’s public health, Dr Adekanmbi stated “Many Nigerians are one illness away from catastrophic healthcare spending”. Professor Olumide, during her session, opined that “We must move away from knowledge, attitude and practice and focus on what to do with the knowledge and how we affect the attitude & practice. We need to move away from basic research.”
The 41st edition of the Journal, a General Edition, was reviewed by Professor Mayowa Owolabi, who reiterated the importance of the journal and its history as the first medical student journal in Sub-Saharan Africa. He highlighted major articles published in the journal, before handing over to Professor T.O. Alonge who launched the journal officially. It was announced that UIMSAites who have paid their dues would receive free copies of the journal.
Awards were presented to Professor Adesola Ogunniyi and Dr Adeosun for serving as Editorial Consultants in the past. Awards were also presented to the winners of the 10th Biennial Prof J.A. Adeleye Essay Competition, held in honour of Prof J.A. Adeleye, the longest-serving chair and honorary editorial board member. His daughter, Dr J. O. Adeleye stood in his stead. The second runner-up of the essay competition was Mr Joshua John Inioluwa from the University of Ibadan, the first runner-up was Mr Ugo Benedict – also from the University of Ibadan – and the winner, Mr Bello Hussein from the University of Ilorin.
The symposium rounded up with the announcement of Prof Owolabi, Dr Adebayo and Dr Ogbole as the new editorial consultants and a vote of thanks by the Co-Chair of the Symposium Committee, Miss Victoria Kolawole.
