The University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association won 6 Gold, 5 Silver, and 8 Bronze medals, at the recently concluded 2024 Nigerian Medical Students’ Association Games, hosted by the Association of Medical Students, University of Lagos, which was held from the 4th to 10th October 2024 at the University of Lagos Sports Complex, Akoka.
The medals spanned track, field, indoor games, and team sports. UIMSA ranked 4th out of the 11 participating schools, with 53 points (5 points for Gold, 3 points for Silver, and 1 point for Bronze).
4 of the 6 Gold Medals were claimed in Swimming by 4th-year, Oludehinwa Adura, who stunned the field on Day 5 in the 50m Backstroke, 50m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke, and 100m Freestyle. The other Gold Medals were won by Opara Charles in Men’s Table Tennis in a flawless 3:0 defeat to his AMSUL counterpart — and Emmanuel Soriwei in the 400m sprint, the third of his four-medal haul.
Similar to the 2023 Provost Cup finals, the UIMSA Male and Female Football teams claimed Silver, with losses to AAUMSA (2:0) and LASU (0:0 full time, 3:2 on penalties), respectively. Abigail Oyedokun claimed Silver in Women’s Ayo. UIMSA’s final Silver medals were in field events; the Sports Secretary, Chidinma Onyiuke, securing her second medal of the Games in Women’s Javelin, and Emmanuel Soriwei in Men’s Long Jump, jumping just 0.03m shy of winner, Onaiwu Nosayaba’s (UBEMSA) 5.81m.
The only other team sports medal was Bronze in Men’s Volleyball, with a 2:0 Major count win over AAUMSA. Three Bronze medals were claimed in Athletics; by the Men’s 4×400 Relay team (Emerald, Abdulquoyum Alausa, Olanrewaju Lekan, and Emmanuel Soriwei), Olanrewaju Lekan in the Men’s 800m, and Emmanuel Soriwei, yet again, in the Men’s 200m. Two were claimed in Men and Women’s Shotput, by Bolaji Ebenezer and Abigail Oyedokun, respectively, and the final two in Women’s Table Tennis, by Shola Balogun and Ofumwengbe-Evba Eseosa.
In the top 3 on the Medals table were; the Association of Medical Students, University of Lagos (AMSUL) with 205 points (29 Gold, 17 Silver, 9 Bronze), University of Benin Medical Students’ Association (UBEMSA) with 78 points (8 Gold, 9 Silver, 11 Bronze), and the Ambrose Alli University Medical Students’ Association (AAUMSA), with 68 points (8 Gold, 5 Silver, 13 Bronze).
