UI Appoints Prof. Peter Olapegba as her 14th Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice-Chancellor after a competitive selection process involving eight candidates.

The appointment was announced today Wednesday the 22nd of July, 2026, by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, following the Council’s approval of the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, ahead of the expiration of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor’s tenure on November 1, 2026.

The appointment process began in April 2026 in line with the University Act, with vacancies advertised in three national newspapers. While six candidates initially applied, a Search Team constituted by the Governing Council identified two additional qualified candidates, bringing the total number of applicants to eight.

Following interviews with all eight candidates, five were shortlisted for the final stage of the selection process. The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board subsequently interviewed the finalists and recommended Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba for the position, a recommendation that was unanimously approved by the Governing Council.

Professor Olapegba is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Ibadan.
