UIMSA Makes Podium at AMSUL Healthweek Quiz, Debate Competitions

The University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association emerged as 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, at the Professor Abayomi Durosimi-Etti Inter-Collegiate Quiz and Association of Medical Students, University of Lagos (AMSUL) Inter-Collegiate Debate Competitions, which held on Tuesday, 5th November, 2024, at the New Great Hall, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). 

Both competitions were organised as part of the lineup of activities for AMSUL’s 58th Healthweek which began on Monday, 4th November, 2024. 

The event began with an opening address from the AMSUL President, Chiedozie Obianyor, after which judges and modalities for the debate were announced. The Debate, which followed the British Parliamentary format, featured particpants from; the Olabisi Onabanjo University Medical Students’ Association, (OOUMSA), the University of Lagos Law Students’ Association, AMSUL, and UIMSA, who debated on the motion, “This House believes that Medical professionals should have the right to conscientously object to procedures that conflict with their personal beliefs”. 

At the end of the Debate, UNILAG Law ranked first, with AMSUL and UIMSA, coming 2nd and 3rd, respectively. UIMSA was represented by Mong Victor and John Eriomala.

There was also an exhibition round between AMSUL and UNILAG Law. This round followed the Karl Popper format, and was won by AMSUL. This was soon followed by the Guest Lecture from Otunba ‘La-Olu Osanyin, CEO, Center for Medical Research and Development, who spoke on avoiding medical malpractice and the role of social media in modern healthcare. 

The Quiz section began shortly after with the same associations participating, bar UNILAG Law, who were replaced by the Lagos State University Medical Students’ Association (LASUMSA). There were three rounds, including a Fastest and Best round with ten questions. All three rounds had questions from four categories; General Knowledge, General Science, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. 

After the first two rounds, UIMSA led with 46 points, ahead of AMSUL and LASUMSA, who were both tied on 44 points. However, by the end of the Fastest and Best round, AMSUL tallied a total of 76 points, to emerge winners, ahead of UIMSA (62 points), and LASUMSA ( points). Ths earned them 400,000 Naira in prize money, with UIMSA and LASUMSA, claiming 250,000 Naira and 150,000 Naira, respectively. 

UIMSA was represented by the Association’s and Royal Quiz Club President, Inioluwa John, Olajide Oluwatobi, Obiekwe Franklin, Oludele Hallelujah, and Mbaonu Daniels.
