UI Students’ Union Secures Approval for Cooking Gas Use in Halls of Residence
The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has today, November 1, 2026, announced the final approval for the use of cooking gas by students in the university’s halls of residence, following a series of engagements and discussions with the university management. The approval is expected to take effect from the next academic session.
The Union said considerable attention was given to establishing the necessary safety measures before approval, citing safety considerations as one of the major factors responsible for the time taken to reach a final decision. However, the approval comes with a new requirement for students to discontinue the use of cooking stoves in the halls of residence. The Union explained that the simultaneous use of cooking stoves and gas could pose significant safety risks. Consequently, students have been advised to take note of the development and make the necessary preparations ahead of the commencement of the next academic session.

The Students’ Union expressed appreciation to the university management for its cooperation throughout the engagement process and also acknowledged students’ patience while efforts towards securing the approval were ongoing.
