UIMSAite Emerges First Runner-up at Intercampus Debate Competition

A 500-level UIMSAite, Victor Mong Udo, along with teammate Abidoye Joshua have emerged first runner-up at the finals of the Engr. (Chief) Jubril Dotun Sanusi Inter-campus debate competition which held at Ilaji Hotel and Sport Resort, Akanran on Wednesday, 24th July, 2024.

The inaugural edition of the inter-campus debate themed ”Preparing students for Success in the 21st century: Student Autonomy and Agency versus Traditional Authoritarian Approaches”, was organised by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, Oyo State Axis in honor of the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde.

The competition began with an elimination round held on the 5th of June where several institutions across six groups competed to qualify for the finals.

The team from University of Ibadan won their preliminaries and proceeded to finish second place in the finals, winning a sum of 150,000 naira.

Speaking with UIMSA Press, Victor said, “UI called, and I answered, and together with my partner, showcased the Ibadan Supremacy!”.

Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa was first place with a prize of 200,000 naira, while Ladoke Akintola University of technology, Ogbomosho in third place was awarded 100,000 naira. Other institutions at the competition were College of Education, Lanlete; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; and Oyo State College of Agriculture & Technology, Igboora.

Dignitaries in attendance at the finals include the sponsor of the competition; Engr. (Chief) Jubril Dotun Sanusi, Oyo State Commissioner for Education, representative of the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Oyo State, Sector Commander of the NDLEA, Oyo State, Director of Department of State Services, Oyo State, amongst others.
