On Saturday, 7th December 2024, the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association hosted the ‘Doctors in Business’ seminar and a trade fair, at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre, University College Hospital.
The events, organised via the office of the Financial Secretary, Vanessa Osaretin Ehiorobo, featured talks on medipreneurship, with the trade fair, serving as a platform for UIMSAites to display their wares and services.
Dr Abib Olamitoye, an alumnus of the Association, and founder of the Tolu Medical Center and Ibadan Central Hospital delivered the keynote address. His speech was on the topic, “Prosperity options for medical students after graduation; instead of Japa“.
Following this was the panel session. Before the session, one of the panellists, Dr Ayodele Olagunju, gave a short speech, highlighting his experience running Purpleivy Medical Consultant Ltd, his private clinic. The proceeding session had himself, Dr Taiwo Ayekanbi, CEO of Skyline Specialist Hospital, Dr Goodness Adeosun, Founder of Gudie Brand, and Dr Chidinma Okoro, Founder of The Blood Drive Network, who joined the session online, speak and answer questions centred on the topic, “The successful medipreneur: Fundamentals of building a brand as a medical doctor“. Plaques were presented to the panellists, afterwards.
The seminar ended with closing remarks from the Financial Secretary, after which attendees were ushered to the trade fair. At the trade fair, UIMSA student medipreneurs displayed items and wares like perfumes, consumables etc.
Speaking on his experience, Titilayo Oluwasebimotife, a first-year UIMSAite, said he had picked up valuable nuggets like, “Dream big, start small” and “when you read about money, you will be surrounded by money“.
