UI’ SU Issues Four-Day Ultimatum for Protest Over 94-Day UCH Blackout

A copy of the Union's statement.

In a statement released yesterday, 2nd February 2025, the Students’ Union, University of Ibadan, issued a four-day ultimatum for immediate restoration of power to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan  — now in its 94th day without power  — with the resumption of physical demonstrations as the consequence of a failure to comply.

According to the statement, this action is necessitated due to the failed restoration of power, following the demonstration on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025, and multiple other engagements. It clarified that ‘The University Management have fulfilled their own part of the condition for restoration of power. However, the delay in restoration is due to the inability of the hospital management to fulfil her part of the conditions’.

Recall that a two-week ultimatum was issued on the scene of the January 22nd demonstration by the UI’ SU President, Aweda Bolaji, and erstwhile President, Samson Tobiloba. There had also been an Alexander Brown Hall (ABH) stakeholders meeting on January 27th, a resolution of which was to request a meeting with UCH and the College of Medicine Administration, followed by this announcement of a return to the demonstration ground.

Also, as of Tuesday, 28th January 2025, plans for an alternative solar hub at the ABH TV Room and solar pumps were well underway; the former of which was met with dissatisfaction by residents. It remains to be seen when this hub will be active and how many residents it will serve.
