UI SU Cancels Congress Following Alleged Assault on Executives

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has indefinitely suspended its upcoming Congress, initially scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2025, following a clash between a group of students and members of the Union Executive Council.

According to an official circular released on May 15, the decision was made after “some students stormed the Students’ Union Building” earlier that day. The students had approached the Union President, General Secretary, and Public Relations Officer to discuss certain issues. However, what began as a civil conversation “degenerated into a show of aggression, harassment and physical force.”

The Union reported that the students “blocked the exit from the President’s office and held the Executives against their will.” In the ensuing chaos, the General Secretary sustained “an injury on his arm.

Describing the attack as “barbaric and shameful,” the Union announced that the Congress “has been suspended till further notice,” prioritizing the safety and well-being of all members.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and will reconvene when assured of a safe and conducive environment for all members to participate without any fear or threat,” the statement read.
