On Friday, 2nd of May, 2025, the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan, embarked on a rally in celebration of World Press Freedom Day, celebrated yearly on the 3rd of May.
The rally began at 10 am at Obafemi Awolowo Hall, following a convergence of journalists at the Student Union Building before winding through various Halls of Residence on the way to the main gate of the University.
Speaking to those present, the UCJ President, Ogunrinu Olanshile decried attacks on press freedom in the University of Ibadan, emphasising the need for protection rather than persecution of journalism. He also stressed the 2025 Press Freedom Day theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” emphasising to CJs present the controversial role of AI in today’s newsrooms. “While these tools bring innovation and efficiency, they also pose concerns about press freedom, accountability, and editorial integrity.”
