The 2024 Distinguished Alumni Lecture of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (ICOMAA) held Thursday, 14th of November, at Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre.
The event was compered by Dr Gbolahan Obajimi, the immediate past Secretary-general of ICOMAA who introduced the dignitaries present, including the foundation Provost of the College of Medicine; Emeritus Professor Oluwole Akande.
The Provost, represented by the Dean of Clinical Sciences; Professor Lawal, apologised for his and the Vice Chancellor’s unavoidable absence due to the ongoing convocation ceremonies. He proceeded to express his gratitude to ICOMAA for their unwavering support to the College and Hospital.
In her opening remarks, the Chairperson of the event Dr Temitope Ilori (Director General of the National Agency for Control of AIDS), expressed her gratitude to all the dignitaries and teachers present. She also acknowledged the ongoing blackout in the hospital and donated a sum of 1 Million Naira to The Alexander Brown Hall for purchasing fuel.
The Lecturer of the Day, Professor Olakunle Akinboboye, explained that the topic of the lecture; “Drug Treatment of Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction: The Method to the Madness, and the Madness to the Method”, had been inspired by a patient who had become frustrated with the several medications they were being prescribed for cardiac issues. He defined heart failure and outlined the evolution of the models for understanding heart failure, and the most recent drugs of choice. In conclusion, he encouraged the students to discover the “unknown unknowns” of heart failure.
Plaques were presented to the Distinguished Lecturer (who donated another sum of 1 Million Naira), other members of ICOMAA, as well as the Class of 1989 for being the best-performing class.
At the end of the event, the outgoing President ICOMAA; Professor Emmanuel Otolorin presented the hand-over report to the incoming President; Professor Samuel Omokhodion. Professor Omokhodion appreciated ICOMAA for the confidence they had put in him and promised to raise the bar even higher.
