The Deboye-Led Students’ Union Executive Council made a release stating the official position of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union on the statement issued by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, on the outgoing VC’s tenure.
Dated July 24, 2026, the executive council clarified that the publication was neither initiated, endorsed nor authorised by its leadership. It stated that its leadership was not consulted before the NANS President’s statement was made public and stressed that it “does not, in any way, represent the official position” of UI’SU.
While reaffirming its history of engaging University management on matters affecting students, the council said such engagements may involve disagreement, advocacy and firm action, when necessary. It described these engagements as part of the tradition of student unionism at the University. The SU’EC further reaffirmed its commitment to defending students’ interests while maintaining “dignity, conviction, and integrity.”
It is noteworthy to mention the Temidayo Adeboye released an appreciation letter which he sent out from the office of the President but eulogized Professor Kayode O. Adebowale on behalf of the Union and UI students in general, a similar act that the SU’EC has now condemned the NANS president’s statement for in its recent release. The statement released by the NANS president on the VC’s tenure did not in any way imply communicating the stance of the Union nor did it claim to speak on behalf of UI students. Also, the release also said the SU’EC shall continue to speak when students’ interests are threatened but failed in its duty to stand with students when the Federal High Court, Ibadan, ordered the reinstatement of the UI3 on April 15, 2026.
