The 2K29 MBBS class of the University of Ibadan, ‘Novaris’, gathered at the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden on Saturday for an outdoor costume party organised by the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA). The event, slated for 10:00 a.m. began shortly after 11:00 a.m. and featured games, music, food, competitions and a colourful display of costumes.
Themed “Kaleidoscope”, students arrived in a variety of costumes, including a Yoruba bride, politician, gypsy, Eastern princess, Socrates, John Cena and Jason Voorhees, among others, creating what one could describe as a scene straight out of a movie. The party served as a welcome relief for the class following a demanding first semester.
The event flagged off with the opening remarks by the SDO Preclinicals, Moses Dabor. He welcomed the attendees after which he mentioned a few things about UIMSA. Students were also invited to explain the inspirations behind their costumes. The Yoruba bride, for instance, drew inspiration from her mother, while the Alajo costume was inspired by the comedy series Samu Alajo. Other costumes, including Jason Voorhees and an Eastern princess inspired by African culture, added to the variety and creativity on display. Despite a brief spell of rain, the weather did little to dampen the energy of the gathering.
The event was also attended by the Majority Leader of the 2K28 class, Olajide Olamide Abimboye, who shared words of encouragement and addressed concerns surrounding the University’s academic progression process. He emphasised the importance of unity and urged students to “look out for each other” throughout medical school. The UIMSA President, Folusho, and members of his executive council were also present and shared updates on the upcoming Health Week and the introduction of a new UIMSA merch.
The festivities continued with group photographs, an eating competition and a singing contest, alongside food and drinks sponsored by UIMSA. At the end of the cosplay competition, Joshua, dressed as Jason Voorhees, and Khawlah, dressed as Maleficent, emerged as Mr and Miss Cosplay, respectively, winning ₦10,000 each.
Coming to an end at about past 5 later that evening, with laughter, music, food and an array of creative costumes, the gathering provided the 2K29 class with an opportunity to relax, bond and create memories outside the classroom after a demanding start to medical school.
