Initial flier prior to venue change

The Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Dentistry are set to face off against Public Health and Nursing, respectively, in the Preliminary Round of the Faculty Category at Jaw War: Rise of Legends, as decided at the Jaw War Press Conference, which held today, 27th September, 2024, at the Junior Common Room, Ransome Kuti Hall.

Details such as the timeline, theme, modalities, and draws were revealed at the conference, organised by The Literary and Debating Society, UI.

This edition, the tenth in history, has been tagged ‘Jaw War: Rise of Legends’ and is scheduled to run from 26th November, 2024 to 8th January, 2025, with the Rally coming two days prior, on the 24th. The theme is ‘Africa’s Travails and Triumphs: Moving Forward and Learning From The Past’.

As part of changes to the tournament, there will be two British Parliamentary Debate Exhbition rounds. Also, there will no longer be a second leg for the preliminary round of the Hall Category. The latter change was decided after a 14-8 vote by Senators.

Balloting for the draws was anchored by the President of the Union of Campus Journalists, Tosanwunmi Tarre. The draws for the first round of the hall category are as follows:

– Alexander Brown Hall vs Obafemi Awolowo Hall

– Ransome Kuti Hall vs Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall

– Queen Idia Hall vs Mellanby Hall

Draws for the Inter-Faculty segment

The Faculty of Pharmacy gained an automatic qualification into the Quarter-finals.

Speaking with the Press, Ogonna Okere, President of the  Literary and Debating Society, explained that “Scrapping the second leg of the hall category was not only for finance-related reasons but because a new faculty was added. This elongated the timeline meaning that we’ll have two preliminaries for faculties.”

On the exit of established speakers, he said “We’ve seen an avalanche of very popular speakers leave the school so there’ll be plenty of new faces. As the tag [Rise of Legends] implies, I look forward to seeing amazing speakers, people who are not really so known and people who were only known in certain quarters speaking on the Jaw War stage”.

Recall that the Nnamdi Azikwe Hall and Faculty of Technology won the Hall and Faculty categories, respectively, at the Jaw War 2024 Edition held earlier this year.
