Insignis ‘25; New Medical Doctors Inducted by the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan

A total of 136 members of the Insignis class of 2025, the graduating doctors of Medicine and Surgery, as well as Dentistry of the University of Ibadan, marked a milestone in their career, as they were officially inducted into the Medical and Dental profession by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), on Monday, 20th of October, 2025, at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Agodi, Ibadan. 

The event, which was co-anchored by Dr. Abosede Adebayo and Dr. Adeola T. Williams, began with a welcome address by the Secretary to the College, Mr. A. E. Odedele, which was followed by the Provost’s address. The Provost of the College, Professor T. O. Ogundiran, congratulated the newly inducted doctors on their remarkable achievement and commended them for successfully completing the training program at the Ibadan Medical School, emerging as properly trained professionals. He reminisced with them about their years of studies and sacrifices, and reiterated his confidence in them on their readiness to answer the noble call of the profession. He then extended his felicitations to the parents and guardians, commending their support, faith, prayers, and patience, terming it as the silent foundations for the doctors’ triumph. He concluded his address by charging the doctors to always remember their physicians’ oaths as they were about to take them, as it is a sacred pledge to serve.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor K. O. Adebowale, also gave an address. He started his speech by welcoming the inductees and distinguished invited guests to the event. He felicitated with the inductees on their noteworthy achievement, terming it as a culmination of their hard work through their journey in the medical school. He then admonished them to uphold the highest standard of ethical conduct required of their profession, to practice with compassion and to dedicate their practice to the service of all, regardless of the background. He also thanked the MDCN for their commitment towards regulating the profession and upholding its standards. He extended his gratitude to the parents and sponsors of the inductees for their support. He concluded by wishing the inductees a successful and impactful career.

The MBBS and BDS inductees were respectively presented to the Registrar of MDCN, Professor Fatima Kyari, by the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Professor T. A. Lawal, and the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Professor B. M. Kolude, after which they were addressed before taking their oaths. The Registrar acknowledged the inductees’ achievements and encouraged them to embody their class name; Insignis. She made the inductees understand that they have an important role to play in turning the challenges facing the Nigerian healthcare to opportunities. She charged them to be advocates for their patients, championing public health, be responsible leaders in any capacity they find themselves, and also never forget their roots in any endeavors their planning to pursue, and stressed the need to block the “hemorrhage” of doctors, encouraging them to stay back to serve their country. The Registrar then reminded the inductees about the strict regulation of the medical profession; its training and practice, implying that there are rules to abide by in every process they find themselves doing, especially regarding their housemanship. 

The solemn moment of oath-taking came after, co-anchored by the Registrar and the Provost, including the physician’s oath and the Nigerian’s declaration, and taking a bow to the University, the lecturers, and their parents. 

Dr. Mary Olajumoke Babatunde, the chairperson of the yearbook committee, presented the yearbook of the class, which was followed by the presentation of awards to outstanding students; the Provost Awards for Excellent Participation in Community Life, which went to Dr. Joshua, Inioluwa John (Male Category), and Dr. Amakom, Nneka Lilian (Female Category) for MBBS, and Dr. Arokoyo, Kehinde Davide (Male Category) and Dr. Oladejo, Faridat Oyindamola (Female Category) for BDS. The Emeritus Professor O. O. Akinkugbe Leadership Award went to Dr. Akin-Ajani, Oluwawapelumi Daniel.

The best students in each of the specialities were presented with their awards, a sum of #100 000 each. This was followed by the presentation of the Valedictorian Award, a cash prize of #50 000 to the Best Graduating Student of MBBS and BDS, Dr. Joshua, Inioluwa John and Dr. Ata, Olalekan Vincent respectively, which was presented by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State Branch, Dr. Happy Adedapo, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Dental Association, represented by Dr. Adesola Odofin. The valedictorians gave their addresses, extending their appreciation to all who have supported them and their colleagues all through the journey. They also reminisced about the proud moments as well as the challenging moments, and were grateful to God for how far they had come. They concluded by charging every colleague to go to the outside world and take on greater strides.

Fundraising for different ongoing projects in the college followed, including the Global Sponsor a Student Program, the Hostel Projects, among other projects, were also organized. The event ended with an address from the President of ICOMAA, Emeritus Professor Samuel Omkhodion, who encouraged the inductees to never live solely for themselves, to dedicate their lives to serving others, and also to reinvest values in those who come after them. He ended by congratulating them and wishing them success in their future endeavors going forward. 

Distinguished personalities in attendance include Chief Bisi Akande, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Professor Fatima Kyari, the Registrar/CEO of the MDCN, Dr. Temitope Ilori, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Prof. Omokhodion, the ICOMAA President, Dr. Happy Adedapo, the NMA President, Oyo State Branch, among other medical elders.
