The five-hour ultimatum given by six (6) students of the University of Ibadan in a petition “against the disrespect and falsification of the August 17th Congress resolutions by the UI’ SU Executive Council”, released on Wednesday, 21st of August, 2024, has elapsed, with no response from the petitioned parties.
In the petition, made available to UIMSA Press, the students highlighted the UI’ SU’s leadership ‘heinous disrespect’ by “walking out on students at the last Congress when the session had not been formally adjourned” as well as “for falsifying the resolutions of the last Congress“.
The petition also highlighted the exclusion of one of the resolutions of the Congress, “That school fees payment be suspended“, in the official release sent out by the Union. “Sad to discover, the resolution released by the Students’ Union did not capture the Congress resolutions, which the President acknowledged and publicly read out before abruptly leaving the Congress. We find the misconduct of leaving the Congress abruptly a gross disrespect of the Congress, being the apex organ of the Students’ Union, and the falsification of the resolutions, a breach of the constitution which recognizes the Congress as the final decision making organ“.
It further read, “On this note, we petition and strongly condemn the height of misconduct on the part of the Students’ Union Executive Council, and in addition the Speaker of the Students Representative Council, Busoye Opeyemi Matthias, all whom upon election were vested with the responsibility to represent and defend students interest. Against this backdrop, we unequivocally demand a correction of the error within 5-hours of the receipt of this petition. We make this conscious demand with the expectation that the leadership of the Students’ Union will respect the consensus decision of the Congress”.
Signatories to the petition include Aduwo Ayodele, Nice Linus, Adewunmi Oluwadamilare, Olamide Gbadegesin, Awoyemi Michael, and Bolaji Tireke.
The copy of the petition made available revealed that it had been received by the UI’ SU Executive Council and SRC as of 6:17 PM and 6:41 PM yesterday, respectively, with the Union’s General Secretary, Ogundipo Japheth, signing for the former. With this, it’s left to be seen how soon the petitioned parties respond.
